The Mother Current
My son was conceived on an island surrounded by families of orcas and blue whales - mothers, newborns, and generations moving together through the same waters. Those moments became some of the brightest memories of a complicated chapter in our lives.
I have always felt especially drawn to the blue whale. Where the orca carries the beautiful darkness of the ocean, the blue whale has always felt like its light to me. A vast, gentle presence moving through deep water. Blue became a way of representing the ocean, but also something more: depth, patience, love, and the quiet strength it takes to endure.
For a time, watching these whale families grow was one of the few places where everything felt whole. I remember the way my son's father looked at them. Nothing seemed to shine brighter in his eyes. Those moments revealed a tenderness in him that I loved deeply, even as our life together became increasingly marked by abuse, substance use, and circumstances that ultimately fractured our family.
This whale represents the connection that remains.
Distance, pain, and impossible obstacles can sever a family unit, but they cannot erase every beautiful thing that existed within it. The best parts of my son's father: the wonder and tenderness, and capacity to love that I saw reflected in those whales - live on in my son.
At its deepest level, the whale is a portrait of my love for my child.
It represents the patience I tried to carry, the love I held through circumstances I could not fix, and the strength it took to finally choose protection over staying. Leaving was not the absence of love. It was an act of it.
The electric current moving through the whale represents that enduring connection: invisible, powerful, and impossible to completely sever. It is the current between mother and child, between past and present, between what was lost and what survived.
The whale carries all of it, the beauty, the grief, the love, and ultimately, the choice to protect what matters most.

I’m a one-person art studio, which means I personally create, finish, package, and ship your artwork. There’s no warehouse or big team behind the scenes - just me, putting care into every order that goes out.
Because each piece is made with care and attention to detail, I appreciate your patience while I prepare your order. My goal is always to make sure your artwork arrives safely and is something you’ll be proud to have in your space.
